"The thing that is troubling me lately is how to enjoy life/architecture now. We're screwing up the planet, smearing everything good about it. Should we just sit and worry about impending doom? How do I enjoy today when I know we're screwed in the future? If there is a meaning to life, and I believe that there is, how do we find it? How do we do the right thing with what we have in the situation we're in? Will opportunities come? or are they made? Do you get what i'm saying? Things just seem so overwhelming when you look at the big picture, a big picture that has a dramatic OH SHIT moment at the end of it. How can i get around this? Any ideas?"

I didn't mean to drop the "meaning of life" question here, but its something that has been brought to my attention. We've been brainwashed to believe the world is facing varying degrees of apocolyptic catastrophes that we won't be able to drive away from in cars, happening anywhere between December of 2012 and 2100 or so (although we may have to hope we evolve into gilled mammals by that point).

I don't mean to clutter the sustainability argument with larger issues. The main point is, how do we make useful actions today and what can we do to improve humanity.

"What man is he who does not make the world better?"

I've come up with two things. Two that should take care of everything else.

1) Faith. In God, or in Life, or in Something. I'm reminded of Ehrmann's prose, "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." Word.

2) Happiness. Find what makes you happy and do it. Too many people don't. It's that simple. I continually cite people who are smarter and more intelligent than I, and I won't stop here. “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs - ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman
Whether is sustainability, art, music, helping and protecting others, teaching, preserving our liberties, etc. Find yourself, and do the damn thing.

Hope this provides some clarity.

Happy New Year.

I really like the two parts to the comment above. I reminds me about what it is that helps me to believe that each day can be better. It is like riding a see-saw, you can be going up or down but all the while you can feel it, and you can try to figure out what to do to do better. By doing what makes you happy, you can "do better" for an improved future.
By believing or having faith that we can do better and make a difference, we come alive and reassure ourselves and others that we may in fact not be screwed in the future, that each of us when put together do make a difference, just as the ants in the post earlier work together. Thoughts?
